What the Fix Involves
Most houses in Westmoreland went up around 1972, and a good share of the openers, track, and spring hardware on those garages has never been swapped out. That's not a knock on the builders - it's just how long this stuff lasts when nobody touches it. When we come out for a new install, we're usually pulling a door and torsion setup that's close to fifty years old, original to the house, sized to whatever opening the builder framed at the time.
A new install means new track, new spring sized to the door's actual weight (not whatever was in stock in 1972), and a new opener with modern safety reversal - a feature older systems simply didn't have. We measure the rough opening before we quote anything, because older framing doesn't always match today's standard door sizes, and we'd rather catch that on the first visit than on install day.
We travel out from Manhattan for this job, about 18 miles each way, so we schedule installs as a full appointment rather than a quick stop-by. If your opening is standard and the wiring is already in place, it's usually a one-visit job.
What You Are Seeing
The usual signs that a replacement makes more sense than another repair: a door that's heavier to lift by hand than it should be, a spring that's been re-wound or jury-rigged more than once, panels that have warped or rusted at the bottom corner, or an opener that grinds, hesitates, or trips the breaker. On a door this old, a worn torsion spring is often paired with a drum or cable that's original too - so replacing one part without checking the rest just means a second service call in a year or two.
With roughly 230 households in Westmoreland, we're not out here every week, so when we do get a call, we look at the whole system, not just the symptom you noticed. If the track is bent or the hinges are stretched out of shape, that's wear from decades of daily use, not a defect - it's just what original 1972-era hardware looks like at this point.
How to Book
Call or request a quote through our site
Tell us the rough age of the house and what the door is doing (or not doing), and we'll set a date to come out from Manhattan. Because Westmoreland isn't a daily stop for us, we batch the trip - so there's sometimes a short wait between booking and install day. We'll give you a real date when you call, not a vague window.
If you're not sure whether you need a full replacement or a repair
Our Westmoreland garage door repair page covers the smaller fixes - broken springs, off-track doors, opener issues - that don't require a new door.
How Long You Are Without the Door
A standard single or double door replacement, once we're on site with the right size door and opener loaded on the truck, usually runs a few hours start to finish - old door off, new track and jamb hardware set, spring tensioned, opener installed and tested. The honest caveat: if your rough opening is non-standard (common enough in houses built before current framing conventions) or the wiring needs updating, that adds time, and we may need a second trip for a part that isn't something we carry stock of on every run. We'll tell you up front on the first visit if that's likely, rather than surprise you mid-job.
Can You Do This Yourself
A torsion spring under full tension can seriously hurt you - that's not an exaggeration, it's the single most common injury in this trade, and it's why we don't recommend DIY spring work on any door, new or old. Swapping weatherstripping, lubricating rollers, or tightening loose hardware is reasonable for a homeowner to do. Removing an old door, reframing an opening, or setting a new spring to the correct tension for the door's weight is not a weekend project, especially on a house where the opening may not match a modern standard size. If you want to understand your current setup better before deciding, that's a fair reason to have us look at it first - not every job needs a full replacement, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you one.
